Hits n Miss - Week of 25th Jan

Who: Mallika Sherwat
Where: Directors Guild Awards

Mallika hits all the right notes in this silver metallic body-con dress paired with silver gladiator shoes. Her hair is big though - step away from the hairspray, Mallika..And I would have gone with sky-high stilettos with this dress.

Who: Farah Ali Khan
Where: Ritu Kumar's event

Farah looks very sophisticated in this one-shoulder tulip dress in eye-catching blue. I esp. love the big flowers on the shoulder (reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw's flower brooches) and the same colored purse.

Who: Aanchal Kumar
Where: HDIL race

I was flipping thru the pictures of this event and the dress caught my eye - simple, yet so elegant. The simple silhoutette emphasizes her slim shoulders and the red lips are a nice touch. The clutch is perfect.

Who: Amrit Maghera
Where: Femina's unveiling of 50 most beautiful women

She does look genuinely happy to be at this event. On second thoughts, so would I be if I was one the 50 beautiful women in India.. I wonder if all 50 of them did a thank-you speech, hmmm.. Anyways, I digress - back to the dress. I love the sexy draping of this dress and the metallics on the shoulder. The clutch is a little big - two sizes smaller would have looked better.

Who: Anushka Sharma
Where: Femina's unveiling of 50 most beautiful women

Another silver dress - this time paired with black shoes. Anushka has changed her makeup/hair style and has gone from her demure look to a sultry one. I give her six months before "I will never wear a bikini but the scene demanded it":-) She sizzles here - certainly has the legs to pull this look.

Who: Kareena Kapoor
Where: Launch of Lonely Planet magazine

Kareena has gone for a minimalist look with this black and white halter gown. I wish she had accessorized - it would have taken the look up a notch. My number one rule when it comes to dressing is always, always wear earrings. Since she has pulled her hair back - hoops or dangles would have upgraded this look. She also needs to upgrade the man in her life but thats a story for another blog...

Oh no, what was she thinking!!

Who: Mandira Bedi
Where: HDIL race

This is a perfect example on how not to wear orange. The dress print is so tacky and the bag is all wrong. Mandira babes, you need to go back to ur sarees with spaghetti blouses.

Baby, it's cold outside

The second installment of my "How To" section is up and viewable.  This How To section depends on you though .

If you've spent time in Delhi, PLEASE do interject your comments, advice and thoughts!  This can be a great help to newcomers if we work together!

Even though we were told time and time again how H-O-T it was, nothing quite drilled it home until we were sweating it out.  We laughed at folks who told it it got "cold" during winter, but have recently figured out what they mean!

My take on the seasons here ... and how to deal with them :: Delhi Climate

You can always view the pieces in this section by clicking that tab - up and to the right over there - called "How To."

Up next ... hopefully sooner than later ... will be Cooking & Shopping!

Color me red

One of the top Spring 2010 color is Tangy Tomato puree as per the Pantone fashion color report. Pantone is a global authority on color - they look at fashion trends, fashion shows, talk to designers, magazine editors etc (you get the picture) and come up with top colors for each season. We have been seeing various shades of red on the bollywood celebs.

At arm's length.

I've written before about how grateful I am for our new friendships here in Delhi.  Being an expat chick/wife/mom sure gets easier when you're surrounded by great friends.

The problem is ... you're often held at arm's length.

Most people you meet know either the exact date they are leaving, or know it will be sometime in the next year (or so).  Even those you meet that have an undetermined stay, likely have already done the pack-up-and-move so many times already, they are leery to delve too deeply into a friendship.

Sure, there are pleasantries exchanged, we all say "Hey" to each other as we brush shoulders throughout our day, and rarely do you become acquainted with someone that you can't hang out with for at least a little while.

We ask the same questions of each other :

  • How long have you been here?
  • Where did you come from?
  • What does your husband do?
  • How old are your kids?
  • How long are you staying?
We nod politely as we exchange answers ... and sometimes there is a brilliant flash ... there's an instant connection.  Someone has lived where you once did, or you have kiddos in the same grade.  Sometimes even your husbands do the same thing for a living.

Suggestions of getting together for a coffee, or scheduling a playdate are often heard ... but almost like fall leaves rustling down the street ... soon those promises are forgotten.  It's not intentional in most cases ... we just get busy.

I think that when you know a goodbye is inevitable, it's harder to really mean a "hello."

I think that after my first settling in here in Delhi, I've gotten calloused enough to feel sometimes that I have made enough close friends and don't have time or energy for anymore.

I think that I often miss the opportunity to meet some really great people because I know they are leaving anyway.

I watch my kids interact with their new friends and am surprised that this mentality trickles down to them as well.  Even Mia has already grasped the concept that one day - either she will move - or her friends will.  Already in the time we've been here, 3 little people have left her preschool for another job/posting, and she doesn't quite know how to come to terms with it.

The middle little has struggled with it the most.  He has found several "new best friends" but he asks me quite often when they will have to leave.  Even at the age of six and seven, these experienced expat kids hold their new friends at arm's length.  They have known what it's like to leave everyone else behind, and still remember what it's like to be the one that stays.

A busload of new families arrived after holiday break, and loads will be leaving at the end of this school year.

With their departure, will also be the disappearance of playdates, morning coffees, study groups and weekend get togethers.

I've moved as many times as I have fingers ...  and even before we crossed the ocean, already knew what it felt like to want to put up the wall and not let anyone get too close.  If you know an upcoming move is inevitable, is it worth investing the time and energy into a new slew of friends?

I crave having friendships where they know my history, and vice versa.  I think it's important to have relationships where some of the skeletons can come out of the closet.  I think it's refreshing to have friends who see your TRUE parenting habits and still like you anyway.  I think it's vital to our mental health to be able to have folks that are a short drive away whose shoulders you can cry on, who are ready to listen and not judge, and share in experiences because they know where you came from.

I also think it's really cool to have friends that you can share a bottle of wine with -- and just shoot the breeze without having to say anything important or meaningful at all ... because nothing more is asked of your friendship.

When I moved to Ohio, I told Mrs. Inkle during one of our hangout sessions, that I wouldn't ever fully vest in our friendship, because I knew we'd end up moving.  She encouraged me to jump in anyway.  Told me to buck up, be myself and not withhold who I truly was just because of a future goodbye.

I can't change the rugged die-hard expat chicks. The ones that hold themselves at arms length. The ones that not only have 10+ moves under their belts, but countless countries, hair-raising stories and amazing scrapbooks. Their experiences are something I can't quite identify with.  What I can do though is be more open myself.  Be more forthcoming with the information about my past.  I can set aside the natural inclination to protect my heart, and instead - offer myself to those I meet.

Instead of holding them at arm's length and even shying away from the awkward double kiss (sometimes even a triple kiss or quadruple, depending on where she is from), I'll just be myself and do more hugging!

In quotation marks ...

I love quotes ... love motivational sayings and love the words of others.

Some I'd like to share with you ::

Mid week round up

Who: Mugdha, Amrita Rao and Celina
Where: Shreyas Talpade's bday bash

I didn't like the egg yellow flip-flops that Mugdha wore.
Amrita Rao is on a mission to prove she is hot and sexy!! Like the dress and shoes but would have preferred the clutch in silver color.

Who: Shamita Shetty and Sophie
Where: Escobar launch

I really dig Shamita's outfit - simple and very classy..This is a very Jennifer Aniston outfit.

Who: Kareena Kapoor
Where: 3 Idiots success party

Love the dress!! I think she can wear a sack and get away with it:-) Those look like Christian Louboutin shoes.

Who: Chitrangada Singh
Where: Gaurav Gupta's Store launch

Wow!! She looks hot - not sure about the shoes though.

Shop the Star Style

I loved the Louis Vuitton dress that Malaika wore but unfortunately my budget does not extend to LV:-) Found something similiar at Lipsy - they do ship to US.

You can buy the Nicole Miller dress that Preity Zinta wore to the Stardust awards at Nordstrom and its on sale!!!

Steal Deepika's look without busting your budget with the Sequin Mesh slip dress from Shopbob and a black stretch belt from Express.

Tomorrow, madam

I try to be a patient person.

Really, I do.

In fact, I just posted recently about how I think Delhi might just change me into a patient person.

There are loud guffaws right now coming from the other side of the Husb's computer as he reads this post .... "Naomi?  Patient?""

I am SO SO SO SO TIRED, FED UP and DONE with hearing the words "tomorrow, madam"

There ... I've said it.

I try not to just vent or be frustrated on this blog, because there IS a moral to most every story, and most often - if I'm willing to look for it - a lesson can be learned.

But in this case, I'm at my wit's end and just pissed off and angry.

If I need something ... I am willing to wait for the appropriate date/time.  If something needs to be repaired, I don't really expect it to be TODAY ...  if I pick something out at the market and ask it to be delivered, I don't really need it TODAY.

But if you say "TOMORROW" then it damn well better be here TOMORROW.

I don't have enough fingers and toes on this body to count the times I've been told "tomorrow" repeatedly for days on end.

What typically happens is something like this :

Day 1 : I ask Shanti to call Alpha Flames to have more cooking gas cylinders ordered for the house.

Day 2 : I forget completely about this request, because Shanti will "just handle" this aspect of my life.

Day 3 : Shanti meekly says to me "Ma'am, the gas cylinder has not come."  I say "can you call again?"

Day 4 : Shanti says (again, very meekly) "Ma'am, I've called 4 times and still no gas cylinders."

Day 5 : I ask Shanti whether we have cooking gas and she says "No, and we are nearly out of gas."  I then call Alpha Flames dude and after five telephone calls whereby either the call is lost or our voices are garbled, I finally reach the main guy in charge.  After arguing for 10 minutes about the cooking gas cylinders, he promises ... TOMORROW.

Day 6 : No gas cylinders.  I am pretty much frustrated at this point because it seems you have to get just ANGRY and screaming to get anything done. So I get angry, start screaming and yelling.  Again?  Am promised TOMORROW.   Shweeeeeew! (I think to myself)  I took care of THAT (I again think to myself).

Day 7 : NO FREAKING CYLINDERS.  Seriously?

 * * *

Maybe what frustrates me is that I've a list of things a mile long of things that are to happen TOMORROW.   I need an assistant to keep track of all of the items on the punch list that were promised to be done tomorrow ... but will likely still be waiting to be checked off two weeks from now.

Is it possible to live in this city and maintain a normal heart rate when trying to get things done?  Do you at some point master the ability to "act pissed" just long enough to get your way ... and then resume what you were previously doing without missing a beat?

If you ask most people, you hear that you HAVE to be pushy to get what you need.  You have to "stand on their heads" to make sure it's done right.  You have to get upset, yell and be mad in order to have things completed.

Maybe instead of letting my blood pressure raise to a boiling point, I just need to plaster a stupid smile on my face, and the next time I hear that word ... simply nod and say "Tika Acha."

Hits n Miss - Week of 17th Jan

Here are my top hits and miss of the week.

Who: Deepika Padukone
Where: At the "Karthik calling Karthik" music release

Sequins was a big Fall/Winter, 2010 trend and this yellow sequins dress highlights Deepika's best feature - her legs. I love the stacked bangles (Spring, 2010 trend) and the black belt.

Who: Kangana Ranut
Where: LV store launch

She looks very polished out here. The beige skirt, shoes, silver bustier, purse - everything is perfect!!

Who: Lara Dutta
Where: Max Stardust awards
The necklace and earrings take the look to "wow"..

Who: Malaika Arora Khan
Where: LV launch

Malaika totally rocks this mini here.

Who: Shilpa Shetty
Where: LV store launch

There is a ruffle on the right hand side which is not very clear in this picture. Love the hot pink color and the gold shoes..

Oh no, what was she thinking!!

Who: Gul Panag
Where: Max stardust awards

I think the pic says it all:-)

Stardust awards

The Stardust awards were held last week on 17th Jan, 2010 in Mumbai. No idea who won what but there were lots of winners on the red carpet. I have rated them from 1 bindi ("What was she thinking!!") to 5 bindis ("I will kill for that outfit:-)"). If you do not know what a bindi is, click here.

Preity wore a beautiful blue dress accessorized with a silver clutch. Love the dress and the color.
Ratings : 5 bindis

The color looks good on her although I didnt like the purse.
Ratings : 5 bindis

Ratings : 5 bindis

Love the way Lara accessorized the white dress with red necklace/earrings..Boho-chic!!
Ratings : 5 bindis

This is a one-shoulder dress but because of the hair, we cant see it properly. She could have taken the hem in as its too long:-) Some stacked bangles would have looked nice.
Ratings : 4 bindis

The neckline is very pretty and so is the color, although her hair looks messy.
Ratings :4

I love the blouse color and her earrings. Bangles would have looked nice.
Ratings : 5

Ratings : 3.5

The dress is good but the embroidery on her bodice looks a little tacky.
Ratings :3.5

The blouse gives it a very "item" look.
Ratings :3

The dress could have done without the feathers and a clutch in black color would have looked better.
Ratings : 2

Didnt like the dress or the hairstyle. The shoes are also bad.
Ratings : 1

The dress is way too tight and it looks like she is hiding her flab with the purse:-)
Ratings : 1

YIKES!!! I am all for pushing fashion boundaries but this?? Its very garish..
Rating : 1
