SINGAPORE - Fresh Air!

This isn’t so much of a trip report, as it is a sharing of what it’s like to live  on ‘this side of the ocean” and have Singapore as one of the closest destinations when the school calendar says “fall break."

We planned this trip kind of last minute, and since the Husb has office cohorts in Singapore, decided it would be a great mix of a family vacation and some work time for Husb.

I was so excited when we found out some of our favorite friends from Delhi would also be spending this break in Singapore during the same time … and much LESS excited when I found out that the Husb would be spending this fall break in INDIA.  Sigh.

When we lived on the other side of the planet, vacations were carefully planned out, scheduled down to the minute (in fact, I have a whole .pdf on Disney World and how to best maximize your time there … quite pathetic actually!) and organized to the nth degree.  Here lately though, I find myself becoming more and more relaxed about our time away from home.

Here lately, it is a privilege to get out of the city we live in … and escape for a few days.  To breath some fresh air, see blue skies, clean streets, and only hear the sounds of urination when actually BEING in a bathroom – not walking down a random street.

We took the late night flight (departing just before midnight) and while it was not 100% pleasant, it did the job.  I may never figure out why there is a full meal served on a flight at 3:00 am local time, with the in-cabin lights left on until 5:00am local time, when you land at 7:30 am local time.  We got just a lick of sleep, but boy was the air sweet in our lungs once we stepped onto Singapore soil.

We’ve hit the grocery store, checked into our delightfully spacious apartment (when you have three kids, you no longer fit in a single hotel room … as most Asian and European hotels offer only a “pax” of four … no exceptions and with tiny quarters) and Mia set to unpacking.  She's just like me in that regard and wants to 'settle in' as soon as we unlock the door!

Once we got our bearings straight and chose bedrooms, we took a stroll to find the closest McDonalds.  We got in some pool time (and a nap) and then met up with our friends for dinner.

I struggled quite a bit with the fact that we spent the majority of the trip minus Daddy … although we had fun with our friends who were also in the same apartment complex, it just didn't seem right to be experiencing a new country and fun memories when he’s back in India working.

The next couple of posts will finish our trip to Singapore ... bear with me while I ramble about what we did while we were there.  Skip them if you're waiting for me to get back to writing about life in India!

By the way, I am feeling quite a bit better.  Thanks for all of your well wishes!  I'm left with just some residual aches and stiffness (which is quite weird) ... and unfortunately Husb caught the same thing and is slowly recovering as well  :(
